how it works

What is Overnight Sight?

This treatment goes under a number of names including Orthokeratology, Ortho-K, Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT) and Overnight Sight.

Overnight Sight uses specially designed therapeutic lenses to correct nearsightedness and astigmatism. Similar in appearance to standard contact lenses, Overnight Sight therapeutic lenses gently reshape the corneal surface during sleep and provide clear, natural vision when the lenses are removed upon waking.

How does Overnight Sight work?

Innovative Treatment

Recent clinical research, the latest corneal surface mapping technology, computerized manufacturing processes and space age oxygen-breathing materials have combined to bring new levels of control, precision and accuracy to the long established techniques used to reduce the eye's optical imperfections. Overnight Sight providers use these advances to greatly improve the success rate of Overnight Sight therapy.

It does not involve removing cells, but rather moving them around or re-distributing the cells temporarily. Precision made, reverse-geometry, rigid gas permeable lenses reshape the central cornea (front of the eye) using ‘hydraulic forces’ in the tear film while sleeping with eye lids closed.

Fast, Safe, and Effective

The speed of corneal reshaping from one individual to the next may vary, but most patients will see 20/20 vision without any correction within days. The goal is that within the first 24-48 hours of starting the treatment, the person has good functional vision. Full correction of myopia is usually noted by day 7-10, or sooner.

The success rate is very high. It has been found to produce no long-term adverse affects. To maintain good unaided vision the lenses will need to be worn regularly, usually overnight for between 3 and 7 nights per week. The effect can last for up to three days after the lenses are removed.

If the lenses are left out, the eye will return to the original prescription and alternative forms of correction will have to be used.

Who is eligible for this treatment?

As long as the eyes are healthy, Overnight Sight can be performed on individuals of any age, and is FDA approved for all ages. Younger patients respond very well to Overnight Sight. This treatment may be especially appealing to those who are apprehensive about surgery or too young for LASIK. Schedule an appointment with an Overnight Sight provider to find out if you or your child is a good candidate.
